Me: Damon Salvatore is a passionate, charming, gorgeous, tragic man with a beautiful soul! He's a bad ass with a fragile heart. He's complicated, tortured, and constantly has his walls up because he's been hurt so much. He loves with everything he has and hates with everything he has and it makes your heart hurt. He's a fucking survivor that puts up with so much shit, so much rejection, and is willing to be the most hated man if it means keeping the ones he loves safe. His moments of selflessness never need an audience because he's Damon fucking Salvatore and he doesn't give a fuck what anybody thinks of him unless it's the woman he loves. He loves forever and if you're his girl, he will always protect you and make you the center of his world. He will just want you to be happy. He's mastered his facade of not caring and being a monster because he CARES TOO MUCH AND IT ALWAYS ENDS BADLY FOR HIM. HE DESERVES HIS HAPPY ENDING GOD DAMN IT!

Am I the only one that when looking back at S1 see not a different Damon, but a big bullshitter that was acting the way he was just to ruin Stefan’s ~peace? His true self (the Damon we saw in S2 and 3) showed when he met Elena because he was vulnerable. And throughout the first season, he was always there, underneath. You have no reason to say that the ‘meeting’ was out of character imo. It’s not like you can say for SURE that he’d snap and idk, take advantage or kill Elena. That’s purely speculative. He did try it when he considered Elena a way to get to his brother, to steal his girl like he thought Stefan had done with him. Not saying Damon’s actions were right (especially with Caroline), but just calling out to how unpredictable his character always was and still is, making that scene in question believable.
Damon was there until the end. He was with his friend, who was dying, instead of making moves on the girl he was hoping to see naked.
